Journalists have once again visited the famous and controversial prison near the town of Tecoluca in El Salvador, during a visit by Costa Rica’s new president, Laura Fernández. Tens of thousands of inmates are held in the facility, officially called the “Terrorism Confinement Center.”
They are crowded into cells with four-tier metal bunks and no bedding. Most are members of the gangs that made El Salvador one of the most dangerous countries in the world just a few years ago.
