On Sunday afternoon local time, a private jet crashed into a residential neighborhood in Palm Beach County, Florida, near the city of West Palm Beach. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said on the social network X that none of the nine people on board survived.
According to ADS-B Exchange, the aircraft descended about 27,000 feet (8.2 kilometers) in a single minute before disappearing from tracking systems. CNN reports that thunderstorms were in the area at the time, but it is not yet clear whether the weather contributed to the crash. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating the cause.
Footage of the crash appeared on social media soon after it happened. It shows the plane exploding and catching fire on impact. A huge crater formed in the roadway, with flames shooting out of it.
CNN notes that U.S. President Donald Trump was also in West Palm Beach on Sunday. He left the airport aboard Air Force One more than an hour before the crash.
