Rubio may leave Trump's cabinet to run for president in 2028

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio may leave Donald Trump's administration after the Republicans' losses in the congressional elections. According to the British newspaper The Independent, he is preparing to compete for the Republican presidential nomination in the November 2028 election, where his main rival would be the current vice president, JD Vance.

A source close to Rubio told the paper that his possible departure would be “absolutely logical.” According to the source, Rubio is now seen as the frontrunner for the Republican nomination and is comfortably ahead of Vance. At the same time, he cannot run while serving as the country's top diplomat, and any association with the Trump administration would only hurt his chances.

The Independent writes that Rubio is one of five members of Trump's current cabinet who are expected to “abandon the sinking ship” after the electoral defeat.

Senior British government officials who have spoken with Rubio back up this conclusion. One of them said: “We are watching what he will do after the House elections. It seems unlikely that he will stay. He would be a strong presidential candidate, and we expect him to go after the job.”

Rubio himself has previously dismissed rumors that he might run for the White House. For that reason, some Republican operatives and senior officials believe that he will stay in his post for the sake of stability, as a moderate voice in the administration.
