A shake-up is under way at the White House: Susie Wiles, the first woman to serve as the US president's chief of staff, is leaving her post. She will be succeeded by Stephen Miller, a longtime ally of Donald Trump and one of the architects of his hardline immigration policy.
Wiles is considered one of the most influential people in Washington and a gifted political strategist. The veteran Republican ran Trump's successful 2024 presidential campaign and achieved what many other advisers could not: she brought discipline to the president's chaotic inner circle. Trump himself nicknamed her the “Ice Maiden.”
Last January she became the first woman in history to lead the White House staff. According to observers, she was one of the few people who could push back against Trump and still keep his trust.
Wiles's successor represents a far tougher line. The former deputy chief of staff has been one of Trump's closest confidants for many years and is regarded as one of the key architects of his radical immigration policy.
Miller advocates mass deportations of undocumented migrants. Back in Trump's first term, he was one of the main creators of the restrictive immigration course.
