Plzeň police find no wrongdoing by officer who struck a subdued man

Police in Plzeň have found no wrongdoing by the officer who was filmed striking an already subdued man several times. The case is closed, with no personnel or disciplinary consequences. The incident took place on 22 June near the J. K. Tyl Theatre in Plzeň, after patrols received a report of a physical assault.

The footage quickly spread on social media, after which the police internal control department and the General Inspectorate of Security Forces (GIBS) looked into it. Police said: “In reviewing the matter, we found no criminal offence on the part of the officers involved, so we have set the case aside.”

Police spokeswoman Pavla Burešová said that her colleagues acted in accordance with the law and internal regulations. She recalled that a man was at the scene whom patrols initially did not know whether he had been involved in the conflict. “Our colleagues wanted to question him, but he ran away and ignored lawful orders,” Burešová explained at the time.

According to her, the detained man did not cooperate and put up fierce resistance. “The use of coercive measures is entirely justified in such cases,” she added.
