Hungarian PM rides through Rome on Vespa scooter with son

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar rode through the streets of Rome on a legendary Vespa scooter with his twelve-year-old son Miklos, right after an audience with the pope, to whom he had introduced two of his three sons.

Magyar posted a video of the ride on his Facebook page. The footage shows father and son riding past the monument to Victor Emmanuel II and the Colosseum — both clearly enjoying themselves.

Magyar explained the choice of a scooter over a car by pointing to Rome’s notorious traffic. “Given the huge traffic jams in Rome and our tight schedule, we decided to take a scooter instead of a car,” the prime minister said.

Online commentators quickly began speculating about how the prime minister’s security had been arranged in such an unusual situation. Although only Magyar and his son are visible in the video, security personnel likely accompanied them discreetly. According to available information, the route, the intersections along the way and the planned stops near landmarks had been arranged in advance and secured by the Italian police.
