Vysočina to improve Dukovany-area reserve with CZK 2.5m grant

Until 2029, the Vysočina Region will be improving conditions in the Dukovanský mlýn nature reserve in the Třebíč district through repeated mowing and sheep grazing. The critically endangered garland flower grows here. Workers will also remove unsuitable tree species, with the aim of restoring the area’s character as steppe and wooded steppe.

The region has been promised a grant of more than CZK 2.5 million for the project from the Environment operational programme. The regional council decided to apply for payment of part of the funds for work carried out this year in the first phase. Regional governor Martin Kukla (ANO) confirmed this to journalists.

The reserve, covering almost 20 hectares, is part of the European-significant Jihlava River Valley site and lies by the Mohelno reservoir above the submerged Dukovanský mlýn mill. Besides the low shrubs of the pink-flowering garland flower, other protected plants grow here that are found nowhere else in the region, such as the common twayblade and the field fleawort.

The regional authority in Vysočina oversees more than 150 small specially protected areas. Two new ones were added this spring: the Hraběcí stolek nature reserve in the Žďár district and the Frejlach natural monument in the Pelhřimov district. Each covers about 20 hectares. Hraběcí stolek became the 67th nature reserve, and Frejlach the 92nd natural monument, under the region’s care.
