Physical copies of Grand Theft Auto 6 have begun arriving at stores, but the boxes do not contain a disc. According to Polygon, Rockstar Games has shipped code-in-box editions to retailers so they can reach customers on time, and buyers will receive a download code rather than game media.
The first look came from Germany. Polygon reported that shipments seem to have reached MediaMarkt stores there, and the retailer showed the physical edition on its Instagram stories. Customers who bought the code-in-box version will have to wait a little longer than digital buyers to start downloading the game.
Polygon lays out a short run of dates leading to release:
Preloading lets fans download the game ahead of time so they can play as soon as it becomes available in their region.
Polygon said MediaMarkt's Instagram stories gave a first view of the poster that will go to people who pre-ordered the game. An employee also shared a close-up of the outside of the box. According to Polygon, it carries the official game description, screenshots featuring Jason, Lucia and Leonida, and labels such as online support and in-game purchases.
The online support label drew attention from players. Polygon cautioned that, at this stage, it most likely refers to mini-game leaderboards rather than GTA Online. That is the outlet's interpretation, not a statement from Rockstar.
The main practical point is that the physical edition works as a boxed download code. Someone who buys it in a store will not get a disc, even though the product sits on a shelf like a traditional release. Polygon noted that the lack of a disc does not stop the box from making the launch feel more real to fans.
The format also affects timing. Digital buyers on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X can preload from Nov. 10, while code-in-box customers can start only on Thursday, according to Polygon. Both groups are working toward the same Nov. 19 release date. Players who want the game ready at launch should note that the preload window differs by edition.
Stores are also gearing up for crowds. Polygon reported that local retailers have begun preparing for the surge of customers expected on Nov. 12, when physical editions are due to be picked up.
The next step is the Nov. 10 digital preload, followed by the Nov. 12 retail rush and code-in-box preloads, and then the Nov. 19 release. Rockstar has not, in Polygon's report, commented on the packaging details or on what the online support label covers.
