Overnight on Sunday, part of the Pero's Bridge, a pedestrian bascule bridge in the English city of Bristol, collapsed into the water. Not long ago, its railings were decorated with around three tonnes of “love locks”. According to the BBC, citing a city council spokesman, nobody was injured.
The bridge had been closed to pedestrians since August, when its lifting mechanism failed an inspection. The middle section was due to be dismantled this week, but it collapsed first.
According to Andrew Brown of the city council, the bridge's hydraulic arm was damaged in the fall. A small amount of oil got into the harbour. There were no injuries.
The bridge was built in 1999, and the plans for its future remain unchanged. The whole structure is to be rebuilt, and it is due to reopen after the repairs next spring.
