Cheb (German: Eger) is 166 km from Nuremberg (1 h 50 min by route planner), 255 km from Munich (2 h 45 min) and 171 km from Prague (2 h 8 min); a direct train from Prague takes 2 h 51 min. Half a day is enough for the square, Špalíček, castle and a museum; with Františkovy Lázně (Franzensbad) and the Soos bog it becomes a full day. In winter the castle interiors are closed from 1 November 2026 to 31 March 2027, while the grounds are free on weekends from 10:00 to 15:00. Around Prague checked opening hours, prices and rules on the official websites on 3 November 2026 and train times in IDOS for 5 and 7 November.

The square and Špalíček

King George of Poděbrady Square (Náměstí Krále Jiřího z Poděbrad) holds the eleven merchants' houses of the Špalíček (German "Stöckl"), some half-timbered. They were built from the 13th century on the site of market stalls and finished in the 15th. Kramářská Lane splits the block and is only 160 cm wide. Nearby St Nicholas Church is the town's oldest surviving church.

The castle in winter

Cheb Castle (Chebský hrad) is the only Staufer imperial palatinate in Czechia; Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa began building it in 1179. What remains is a palace torso with five-part Romanesque windows, the two-storey Chapel of St Erhard and St Ursula, and the 18.5 m Black Tower of volcanic tuff (109 steps).

From 1 November 2026 to 31 March 2027 the castle runs a winter regime: all interiors are closed and entry to the grounds is free. The courtyard, palace remains and Baroque rampart are open; you can look at the tower and chapel, but the castle does not say whether the tower can be climbed. The regular ticket with interiors costs 120 CZK, reduced 60 CZK, family 300 CZK.

Museum, gallery and opening hours

The Cheb Museum (Muzeum Cheb) occupies the former Pachelbel House on the square. According to Visit Cheb, Wallenstein was murdered there on 25 February 1634; the museum has a Wallenstein gallery. The GAVU gallery shows Gothic and modern art, the Retromuseum 1960s–80s design.

Františkovy Lázně, Komorní hůrka and Soos

Františkovy Lázně (Franzensbad) is 6 minutes from Cheb by train (Os 20874, 5 November, 9:40). The František Spring pavilion of 1832 covers the town's oldest tapped spring; the resort website advises asking a spa doctor before drinking. Cars enter the central spa zone only after paying at a machine.

Border markets and shopping

In the second half of May 2026 Czech customs inspected the border markets at Svatý Kříž (near Cheb), Potůčky, Hřensko and Hatě and the Sapa market in Prague. The 50 inspections covered 111 entities and found a breach of law in all 50 cases. Customs detained over 45,000 items worth almost 292 million CZK as originals, among them fake clothing, shoes, watches, electronics and cosmetics.

German customs writes that for entry from EU states customs rules do not in principle apply, and goods for personal use are duty-free. Restrictions cover medicines, unapproved fireworks (banned), weapons and ammunition; cash of 10,000 € or more must be declared on request. Its page on travel within the EU says nothing about counterfeit brands, so we make no statement on them.

Cheb: frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Do I need a vignette for Cheb?

From Bavaria, not according to the 2026 SFDI map. From Prague the route uses toll sections.

The grounds are, on weekends from 10:00 to 15:00, free of charge. The interiors are closed until 31 March 2027.

Germany notified them until 15 March 2027. Carry your documents.

Is half a day enough for Cheb?

For the old town, castle and one museum, yes (our estimate: 3 to 4 hours). Not with Františkovy Lázně and Soos.
