Low Danube waters reveal WWII German military motorcycle with soldier's remains in Budapest

On the banks of the Danube near Batthyány Square in Budapest, falling water levels have exposed an almost intact German military motorcycle from the Second World War. Human remains and ammunition were found alongside it, according to the Hungarian Ministry of Defence's Museum of Military History.

The motorcycle's fork, jutting out of the mud, was first spotted by passers-by strolling along the embankment over the weekend. When museum experts arrived at the scene, they discovered not only the motorcycle but also human remains, six German mines, and the remnants of hand and artillery grenades.

Remains handed over to Germany

According to the museum, the site was immediately cordoned off, and the munitions were removed and later destroyed at a secure location. Forensic analysis confirmed that the remains belonged to a German soldier, and they have since been handed over to German authorities.

The motorcycle itself, weighed down by decades of accumulated silt, tipped the scales at over 200 kilograms, making its retrieval from the river no easy task — specialists were assisted by firefighters. The find will now be cleaned and sent for preservation.
