Marienbad (Mariánské Lázně) is a spa town of about 14,200 people, more than 600 m above sea level in the Karlovy Vary Region, and since 24 July 2021 part of the UNESCO site "The Great Spa Towns of Europe". A direct train from Prague takes 2 h 30 min every two hours, from Nuremberg the train takes 3 h 16 min with changes, from Munich about 5 hours. By road the town lists 171 km from Prague, 183 km from Nuremberg and 268 km from Munich. One day is enough for the colonnade, the springs and Boheminium park; from Munich an overnight stay makes more sense. The Singing Fountain has been off since 31 October 2026 and restarts, according to the town, every year on 30 April at 9 pm. Around Prague checked prices, hours and timetables on official websites on 3 November 2026.
The town grew from 1808 in a marshy valley and became a public spa in 1818. About 40 mineral springs rise in town, cold and carbonated at 7 to 10 °C, not hot like those in Karlovy Vary (see our Karlovy Vary guide). The official walking route has twelve stops, is 1.2 km long and takes about an hour. With Boheminium, the springs and a swim it fills a day.
The Main Colonnade (Maxim Gorky Colonnade) was built in 1888–1889 for the abbot of Teplá Monastery to plans by the Viennese architects Miksch and Niedzielski. Its cast-iron frame from Blansko measures 135 × 12 m, the longest of its kind in Czechia according to the town. Josef Vyleťal painted the ceiling frescoes in 1979; cosmonauts float among them.
In front of the colonnade plays the Singing Fountain (Zpívající fontána). It was built in 1982–1986 to a design by Pavel Mikšík and first played Petr Hapka's "Music for the Fountain" on 30 April 1986. The pool is 18 m across and the central jet rises 6 m. The shows are free.
The springs are free, says the town. The main ones are the Cross Spring (Křížový pramen) in a pavilion beside the colonnade, the Karolina and Rudolf springs, the Forest Spring (Lesní pramen) and the Ferdinand Spring in Úšovice park. The town describes the Cross Spring water as strongly mineralised with a laxative effect. How much suits you is a question for a doctor, not for this guide. Whether every spring runs in winter, the town does not say; ask the information centre.
The Boheminium miniature park (Krakonoš 665) shows over 70 Czech buildings at 1:25 scale, among them Karlštejn Castle, the Ještěd tower and Český Krumlov Château. It stands about 1.5 km from the centre and is open every day all year, says the operator.

"Marienbad thermal bath" can mislead: we found no public thermal bath in the town's official information, the pools belong to spa hotels. This guide gives no medical advice, only what providers publish.

The Falkensteiner page does not say whether the pool water is thermal. Trains to Františkovy Lázně take 29 to 41 minutes. Single massage prices at Ensana we did not find; ask the information centre (+420 354 622 474, [email protected]) or the hotel.
On 24 July 2021 eleven spa towns in seven countries were inscribed together, among them Marienbad, Karlovy Vary and Františkovy Lázně. More heritage is in our guide to 12 UNESCO sites in Czechia.
The town calendar lists Advent events at the colonnade on 27–29 Nov, 4–6 Dec and 18–20 Dec 2026, a winter fair on 26–28 Dec and "Christmas in the Chopin House" on 11–19 Dec. Snow can lie at this altitude: see winter tyres in Czechia.

IDOS found no direct bus from Prague on that day. The Bayern-Böhmen-Ticket of Deutsche Bahn costs EUR 37 for one person, EUR 47.60 for two and EUR 79.40 for five. It is valid in Bavaria and on Czech trains of the categories Ex, R, Sp and Os; the direct IC is not listed. From Cheb a local Os train also runs to Marienbad (e.g. 9:59, arriving 10:31). More: trains to Prague.
From Prague and Nuremberg, yes: the walking route takes about an hour, plus Boheminium and the springs. From Munich the train takes over 10 hours there and back, so stay overnight or drive.
From 30 April, 9 pm, to 31 October at every odd hour from 7 am to 7 pm and at 9 and 10 pm. It has been off since 31 October 2026.
We found no public one. Spa hotels offer pools and saunas, e.g. the Falkensteiner day spa for CZK 900, by reservation.
The town calls the mineral springs free. With health conditions, ask a doctor first.
