Karlovy Vary Day Trip from Prague: Spa Towns Guide 2026

Karlovy Vary is the easiest West Bohemian spa town for a day trip from Prague: the bus takes 1 h 40 min to 2 h 15 min, the direct train about 3.5 hours. The town has 15 healing springs, and the hottest, Vřídlo (the Hot Spring), comes out at 73.4 °C and shoots up to 12 metres. Further south is Mariánské Lázně (Marienbad) with its cast-iron colonnade and Singing Fountain, and near Cheb lies quiet Františkovy Lázně. Since July 2021 all three have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage site "The Great Spa Towns of Europe". Around Prague checked spring temperatures, museum prices, the fountain season and journey times with the town websites, Becherovka, Moser and IDOS on 30 October 2026.

Colonnades and springs in Karlovy Vary

Five colonnades line the Teplá river: Mill (Mlýnská), Market (Tržní), Park (Sadová), Castle (Zámecká) and Hot Spring (Vřídelní). The most photogenic is the Mill Colonnade by Josef Zítek, opened on 5 June 1881, with five springs under its roof.

Vřídlo (Hot Spring)73.4 °C
Charles IV Spring65.8 °C
Mill Spring57.8 °C

Vřídlo is the town's trademark: its geyser rises up to 12 metres in a separate hall of the Hot Spring Colonnade, built in 1975 as the third colonnade on the site.

How to drink the water

This is a concentrated mineral solution, so the town's official advice is:

The traditional porcelain or glass spa cup, the lázeňský pohárek, has a thin spout in the handle for sipping the hot water slowly.

Becherovka and Moser glass

Becherovka, a liqueur of about 20 herbs and spices, has been made in Karlovy Vary since 1807. The Home of Becherovka museum (T. G. Masaryka 282/57) occupies the building where it was produced for over 140 years, until a new factory took over in 2010. Tours last 45 minutes and run Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00–17:00, in groups of up to 10, in Czech, English, German or Russian. Booking is required, and drivers, pregnant women and under-18s get no alcohol.

Moser was founded by Ludwig Moser in 1857 and has used only lead-free crystal since 1893. The museum (Kpt. Jaroše 46/19) is open Monday to Saturday, 9:00–16:00, for CZK 150. Glassworks tours (weekdays, starts 9:00–14:00, CZK 370) must be booked ahead; closed-toe shoes are required.

Mariánské Lázně and the Singing Fountain

About 40 cold, naturally carbonated springs (7–10 °C) rise in the town itself; the best known are the Cross, Ferdinand and Rudolph springs. The centrepiece is the cast-iron colonnade of 1888–1889, cast in Blansko and decorated with frescoes by Josef Vyleťal.

The Singing Fountain by Pavel Mikšík first played on 30 April 1986 and was rebuilt in 2024–2025 for almost CZK 50 million.

Františkovy Lázně and the UNESCO listing

The smallest of the three was founded on 27 April 1793 and named after Emperor Franz I. Its oldest spring, Františkův pramen, has an Empire-style pavilion of 1832; the town mascot is a bronze boy with a fish called "František".

In July 2021 all three towns joined the UNESCO list as part of "The Great Spa Towns of Europe": 11 towns in seven countries, including Baden-Baden, Vichy and Bath.

Getting there and booking tickets

Buy tickets on the carriers' own websites; journey times are from IDOS for weekdays in November 2026. Guided day tours from Prague also exist: check how much time they leave for the colonnades.
