New "Spider-Man" Breaks "Avengers" Opening Weekend Box Office Record

New

Sony's latest instalment in its Spider-Man franchise has set an all-time record for the biggest opening weekend at the US and Canadian box office, pulling in $358 million. Sony confirmed the final figure, which even topped Sunday's preliminary estimate of $355 million.

The previous record was held by 2019's "Avengers: Endgame", which took in $357 million on its opening weekend. The new film — already the fourth instalment in the Spider-Man saga — was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, with Tom Holland once again in the lead role. Reports put the production budget at $225 million, not including marketing costs.

Ahead of the premiere, there had been doubts about whether the film could match the success of its predecessors. "Records are made to be broken, but this is one we'll always be proud of," said Tom Rothman, head of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group.

Worldwide, the film earned $932 million over its opening weekend — the second-highest total in film history. By comparison, "Avengers: Endgame" took in $1.2 billion globally on its opening weekend back in 2019. Analysts believe there's nothing stopping the new Spider-Man film from eventually crossing the $2 billion mark worldwide — a feat achieved by only seven films to date. Holland has already hinted that work on the next chapter of the saga is underway.

Exit polls of moviegoers in the US and Canada showed that tickets were bought predominantly by men (around 61%), with young audiences making up a significant share of the crowd. According to a firm that tracks cinema attendance, roughly 24.1 million people saw the film over the weekend. Market analysts hope the film's success will help push summer box office takings above $4 billion for the first time since the 2023 season, which was defined by the "Barbenheimer" phenomenon (the combined draw of "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer").

The film also opened strongly in Czechia, where it topped the cinema attendance charts after its first weekend, knocking the blockbuster "The Odyssey" off the top spot. Since last Wednesday, 257,000 viewers have seen the new Spider-Man film in Czech cinemas. "The Odyssey", meanwhile, has drawn 359,000 viewers over three weeks of release and remains the most-watched film of 2026 in Czechia, ahead of the "Michael" biopic and "The Devil Wears Prada 2".
