The traditional harvest of the Rožmberk pond in South Bohemia has been cancelled because of drought. In its place, the Třeboň fish farms will hold Days with the Třeboň Fishermen, with fishing, tours and tastings.
Visitors to the farms will be able to catch rainbow trout themselves. For the youngest guests there are contests, games and a pool of live fish that children love. The programme also includes tours with commentary from a fisherman and a demonstration of how fish are processed and cooked. In the shop you can buy fresh fish, Třeboň sour fish balls or two kinds of fish pâté.
The fishermen have yet to decide the harvest dates for the other ponds. According to Kukačka, the harvest dates for ponds with market fish are being adjusted: until mid-November they will catch only as much as is needed to fill orders. The fishermen plan to harvest the largest ponds at the turn of November and December, to keep the time the fish spend in storage tanks as short as possible. This year there are no plans to harvest the Horusice, Dvořiště and Bošilec ponds, nor the Svět pond, which is harvested every two years, in odd-numbered years.
Rybářství Třeboň a.s. is one of the largest freshwater fish producers in Czechia and in Europe. It accounts for roughly 15 percent of all fish produced in the country. The company manages 428 ponds with a total area of 8,000 hectares: it owns 1,343 hectares and leases the rest from towns, municipalities and private owners. Annual production is about 2,800 tonnes, 90 percent of it carp and the other 10 percent other fish: tench, pike-perch, pike, grass carp, silver carp, whitefish and perch.
