Electricity prices in Czechia: seventh most expensive in Europe

Czechs are paying less for electricity than a year ago, but it has not helped them in the European rankings. According to Eurostat, in the first half of 2026 Czech households paid €288.4 per megawatt-hour, including regulated charges and VAT. That is about 7,026 crowns; for last year Eurostat counted an average of roughly 7,837 crowns. In the ranking of 32 countries, the Czech Republic is, as a year ago, seventh most expensive.

Why the price has fallen

ČEZ spokesman Ondřej Svoboda says the agency's database does not yet hold data for all countries, but it is already clear that prices in Czechia have fallen again, as they have for several years in a row. Czechia is one of nine EU countries where electricity became cheaper year on year; in 14 countries the agency records an increase.

The drop in market prices early in the year helped, and above all the fact that the charge for renewable energy sources was moved from consumers to the state, which saves 599 crowns per megawatt-hour. The commercial part of the price, which the supplier sets itself, fell, while the regulated part (distribution, transmission and renewables support) rose by about five percent, noted Jiří Gavor, director of the Association of Independent Energy Suppliers. For low consumption, prices fell by about ten percent, and for medium consumption by 14 percent, which is the third-best result in the EU.

Who pays more, who pays less

Electricity is more expensive than in Czechia only in Germany, Belgium, Austria, Sweden and Poland. In Germany, according to Eurostat, people pay €361.8 (about 8,812 crowns), roughly a thousand crowns more than in Czechia. According to Gavor, German energy companies are investing in the grid on an even larger scale than Czech ones, which raises the regulated part of the price. In Poland the price is €299.9 (about 7,307 crowns): the government subsidized prices for a long time, but the relief has ended and the full market price now applies.

In Hungary, electricity is the sixth cheapest: the state has heavily subsidized it for many years, which costs the budget the equivalent of 30–60 billion crowns a year. The cheapest is in Turkey, at €65.7 (about 1,600 crowns).

Measured against wages, the picture is worse: when adjusted for purchasing power parity, Germany and several other countries come out ahead, while Czechia ranks third most expensive by this measure.

What next for prices

Most suppliers only began raising prices in the summer, most often in August, so the increase will show up in the third-quarter statistics. The final price depends on the tariff, the region and the product. In the most common tariff, D02d, in the PREdistribuce area the price from PRE is 6,423 crowns per megawatt-hour, from ČEZ in the same area 5,927 crowns including VAT, and in the ČEZ Distribuce area 6,608 crowns. At the same time, the tariff for those who heat with electricity is traditionally one of the cheapest in Europe in Czechia, while in the ordinary D02d the price is rising.
