EU Innovation Fund backs 77 projects, incl. a Prague energy platform

EU to back 77 Innovation Fund projects, including a floating energy platform in Prague

The European Commission has announced that the European Union will support 77 projects from the Innovation Fund. They include a Czech one: a floating energy platform in Prague.

The selected projects are located in 23 countries of the European Economic Area, meaning the EU plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. According to the European Commission, they cover a wide range of sectors: energy-intensive industry, renewable energy and new ways of storing energy, clean technology manufacturing, zero-emission transport, processing and recycling of critical raw materials, advanced alternative fuels and industrial carbon management.

The Commission believes the 77 projects have the potential to significantly cut greenhouse gas emissions. “In their first ten years of operation they could avoid emissions equivalent to about 290 million tonnes of CO2. That roughly corresponds to cutting emissions by one tonne of CO2 every second for ten years,” the EU executive said.

The Czech project ComPon plans to install a floating energy platform in Prague to produce heat and cooling. It will feed heat and cooling into the city’s district heating and cooling network.
