Plzeň coalition: ANO teams up with STAN and PRO Plzeň movement

ANO to form coalition with STAN and PRO Plzeň in Plzeň

Following the municipal elections, a coalition of ANO, STAN and PRO Plzeň will be formed in Plzeň. Zarzycký of ANO announced it at an emergency press conference on Sunday evening. ANO will keep the mayor’s post, and STAN leader Aleš Tolar will become first deputy mayor.

For the previous four years the city was run by a coalition of the same makeup, which also included the Pirates. They have now failed to make it into the city council.

After the elections, ANO first reached a deal with PRO Plzeň, which ran this year together with the Christian Democrats. To choose a third partner, the ANO team held talks with both STAN and ODS, which had been in opposition for the whole of the past four years.

Who gets which posts

“ODS’s offer was not bad, but we chose what turned out to be better for us. STAN’s demands suited us more,” Zarzycký said.

According to him, ANO will get the mayor’s post, the economic and technical departments, including the chief architect, as well as education and other areas.

STAN, as Tolar explained, will keep transport and housing policy, with culture as a new area. Another deputy mayor will be Tomáš Moravec of PRO Plzeň: “We will be in charge of sport, business support and the smart city.”

Besides ODS, the opposition will include the Chceme Plzeň coalition, which brought together independent candidates, TOP 09 and the Greens.
