The Hradčanská metro station in Prague will close for reconstruction in mid-January and stay shut for about a year. The Prague Public Transit Company expects the fully modernized station to reopen by the end of next year.
The work will affect almost everything: the platform, the escalator tunnel, the vestibule and the underpass. According to Lukáš Radil, head of civil engineering operations at Metrostav CZ, the project is technically demanding. The main challenge is coordinating construction and technical work in a cramped underground space.
The start is especially tricky: during the preparatory stage the station is still in operation, so builders may work only between midnight and 3 a.m.
Jaromír Beránek (Pirates), Prague’s deputy mayor for transport, noted that Hradčanská is next in line after the successful reconstructions of Českomoravská, Pankrác and Jiřího z Poděbrad stations, while Flora station is being renovated now. He said the station has been in service for almost half a century and its last partial repair was 30 years ago. It will now get a full reconstruction: new utilities and escalators, repairs of leaks and careful restoration of the original architectural features and reliefs.
The modernization will also create the technical groundwork for a future barrier-free connection to the new railway station.
The contractor is a consortium of Metrostav CZ and Geosan Group, and the work will cost 1.134 billion crowns excluding VAT, transit company spokesman Daniel Šabík said.
This affects everyone who uses Hradčanská station, including foreigners. It will be closed from mid-January for a year, and reopening after reconstruction is expected by the end of next year.
