The Czech state will allocate 6 billion crowns to build affordable rental housing. The apartments are intended for workers in so-called essential professions, such as nurses, doctors, teachers or soldiers, and are to be rented out at prices below the market rent for ordinary apartments.
According to Regional Development Minister Zuzana Mrázová (ANO), municipalities, the state, universities and even hospitals have already prepared affordable rental housing projects: they want to build and receive apartments for their employees. The program will support not only new construction but also renovations and purchases of residential buildings. The ministry plans to publish details at the end of the year.
The program will continue the support launched two years ago by the previous government of Petr Fiala (ODS). Back then, up to 7 billion crowns in support was available, but interest was so high that not everyone received it.
Municipalities are keen to build because their current housing stock is not enough. According to a recent survey by the analytics firm CEEC Research, in Prague and the Central Bohemian Region about two thirds of municipalities and city districts lack affordable rental apartments. At the same time, 87 percent of local governments consider state support an important or decisive factor when deciding whether to build.
Housing unaffordability is felt most acutely in big cities with expensive apartments. A municipal apartment can help them attract needed doctors or teachers to the city.
