The Democratic Party has won a majority in both houses of Congress, according to projections by US media: the House of Representatives and the Senate. This limits President Donald Trump's ability to push through his agenda, but he has said he is ready to accept the election results and work with his opponents.
According to NBC, once all the votes are counted, Democrats could hold 255 of the 435 seats in the House of Representatives, and Republicans 180. These figures may still change. Media began reporting a Democratic win in the lower chamber shortly after 3 a.m.
Talk of a Democratic majority in the Senate began later. It was prompted by projections that Democrats had won two Senate seats: James Talarico in Texas and Adam Hamilton in Kansas. After that, according to the analytics group Decision Desk HQ, the Democrats' chances of controlling the Senate rose first to 93 percent and then to 97 percent. The party had earlier already taken Senate seats from Republicans in South and North Carolina.
Control of both chambers allows Democrats to block the president's initiatives, investigate his administration and, if they choose, launch a third impeachment process.
In an interview with The New York Times, Trump said he was “absolutely ready to accept the results” and expects to cooperate with Democrats. “We'll be happy to work with them,” he said, adding that the two sides would probably “work something out.”
