Poland: tanker trapped by crossing barriers just before a train

Fertiliser tanker trapped by level crossing barriers in Poland

A tanker truck carrying fertiliser got stuck on a level crossing in Poznań, Poland, as the barriers began to lower and a passenger train approached. The driver managed to get off the tracks just moments before it arrived, and no one was hurt.

According to police, the 31-year-old Ukrainian driver entered the crossing while the barriers were up, but heavy traffic stopped him from getting any further. The barriers then came down and struck the vehicle.

The man later turned up at a police station on his own and gave a statement. His driving licence was confiscated, and the case was passed on for further investigation. Prosecutors accused the driver of creating an immediate danger of a transport disaster: he faces up to eight years in prison.
