France general strike: hundreds of thousands take to the streets

A general strike took place in France on Thursday, with hundreds of thousands of people taking to the streets of cities across the country. Participants protested against the rising cost of living, voiced support for the student protest movement and spoke out against the far right.

Turnout estimates differ

Estimates of the scale of the protests vary considerably. According to the unions, around 1.6 million people took part, about 350,000 of them in Paris. The French Interior Ministry had earlier put turnout at more than 600,000.

What the demonstrators were protesting against

The main demand was action against soaring living costs. In addition, a significant share of participants openly expressed support for the student protest movement, and many took a firm stance against far-right political forces.
