Cross falls on priest during online Mass in Guayaquil, Ecuador

Heavy cross falls on priest during live-streamed Mass in Ecuador

During Mass at the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Guayaquil, Ecuador, a heavy cross broke away from the wall and fell on the head of priest Alfredo Sánchez Molinari. He could not be saved. The service was being streamed online, so the tragedy was seen not only by parishioners gathered in the church but also by many viewers online.

According to Latin American media, it all happened at the 27th minute of the stream. Shortly before, the recording shows Father Alfredo leading the service as usual. Suddenly a large cross detaches from the church wall behind him and falls straight onto his head.

Why it happened is not yet known. As a Chilean news portal notes, it is unclear whether there were any known faults in the cross’s mounting or in the wall itself, or whether it was a chance combination of circumstances.

The accident was confirmed by the Archdiocese of Guayaquil. Its statement says that Father Alfredo Sánchez Molinari “has gone to the house of the Father to enjoy His presence and His glory.”
