Millions of people in the UK planning Bonfire Night events on Thursday can expect a dry but cold evening, according to a BBC weather report. Temperatures are forecast to fall into the mid-single figures through the night, and fog could develop in some areas.
The BBC said high pressure, which built in after a stormy end to October, will dominate for the rest of the week. That should keep most of the country settled, and the weather is not expected to disrupt celebrations of Guy Fawkes night or the Hindu festival of Diwali.
For most people hosting or attending a bonfire on Thursday evening, wet weather should not be a worry, the BBC said. Daytime conditions across the vast majority of the UK will be dry, with a mixture of cloud and some sunny spells.
The BBC advised anyone watching fireworks on Thursday evening to wrap up warmly. Frost is possible in sheltered areas in the northern half of the UK, and fog is likely to form under clear spells overnight, particularly in the north and in areas sheltered from the easterly breeze.
Not everywhere will be fully dry beforehand. With an easterly wind blowing, showers could move in from North Sea coasts across eastern Scotland and eastern England throughout Wednesday, according to the BBC. The best of the sunshine will tend to be in the west.
The BBC said the expected temperatures are more or less the seasonal average, but it will feel much colder than last year. On Nov. 5, 2025, some areas in the southern half of the UK did not fall below 14C. That made it the warmest Bonfire Night on record for a number of weather stations, the BBC said, including those at Southampton, Teddington, Portland, Bude and Anglesey.
Many communities will keep celebrating through the week. The BBC noted that many firework displays are planned for Friday and Saturday, and that Diwali, the Hindu festival of light, falls on Sunday, Nov. 8. The weather is again not expected to cause problems.
The area of high pressure will gradually move eastward but is forecast to stay dominant through the weekend, keeping conditions generally dry and chilly. The BBC cautioned that fog could become more widespread as winds lighten, especially under clearer skies. That could affect visibility for people traveling to or from evening events.
Looking to the following week, the BBC said low pressure systems could move in again from the west, though it said uncertainty remains.
