The Austrian Cultural Forum and Ambit Gallery present the work of Josef Karl Rädler (1844–1917), an Austrian porcelain painter born in Sokolov. In 1893, at his family's insistence, he was committed to the Mauer-Öhling psychiatric hospital, where he spent the rest of his life. It was there that he created hundreds of watercolours vividly documenting the everyday life of the institution's patients.
The exhibition of Rädler's work is part of the 2026 Lower Austrian Regional Exhibition, dedicated to society's changing attitudes toward mental illness through the ages. The vernissage will take place on 15 July at 18:00 at the gallery of the Austrian Cultural Forum, with representatives of the Lower Austrian Department of Art and Culture in attendance; simultaneous interpretation will be provided. The regional exhibition itself will run until 8 November 2026 at the Mauer clinic near Amstetten.
