On the evening of September 17, police in Leawood, Kansas, got unexpected help from a four-legged “colleague”: a dog dragging its leash led a patrol to its owner, who was lying in his garage and could not get up. According to Leawood police, the man had been waiting for help for about three hours.
The patrol was driving down a quiet residential street when a small dog stepped into the road. Body camera footage captures one of the officers asking: “Well, hello. Why aren’t you going home?” The dog started moving, but it was clear it had no intention of simply walking away. The officers followed it for about half a block and stopped at a house with an open garage door, in front of which another dog was pacing.
The reason for the odd behavior quickly became clear: the owner was lying on the garage floor. He had fallen so awkwardly that he could not get up on his own. The officers immediately called an ambulance, and after receiving the necessary medical care, the man is recovering well. “Thanks to his faithful companion, our officer was able to find him and get him help,” police wrote in the video caption.
The second dog was praised too: commenters noted that it had kept careful watch over the owner while its smaller companion went for help. Some users complained about their own pets: “Mine would have wrecked the kitchen without hesitation in the meantime,” one of them wrote. The officers themselves were also commended for their attentiveness and for responding to a dog’s call for help.
