An elderly resident of the US state of Indiana drifted a sedan on the lawn right in front of the courthouse in Jennings County. Video of the incident, distributed by the AP news agency, has been compared to footage from the show Top Gear.
The recording shows Lorraine Wilkerson circling in a silver car across the grass, throwing up clouds of dirt and dust. At one point the vehicle came close to a paved sidewalk, but fortunately no one was walking there. Authorities confirmed that no one was injured.
Police charged the woman with driving under the influence of alcohol and with other, unspecified offenses. Drifting is a style of driving in which the driver deliberately makes the rear wheels lose traction, so the car slides sideways.
The local sheriff’s office used the incident to warn drivers: “If you indulged in a few too many margaritas at dinner, please don’t get behind the wheel, and definitely don’t do donuts on the courthouse lawn.” It advises anyone who has been drinking to leave the car and find a safe way home.
In Indiana, the blood alcohol limit is 0.08 percent for drivers over 21 and 0.02 percent for those under 21. Penalties can also apply if a driver stays under the limit but alcohol still impairs their ability to drive.
