In Giza, Egypt, 25-year-old Ahmed Ragab caught a small boy who fell from a balcony: the drama unfolded last week in a narrow street, and a camera captured the rescue. The child was left unharmed.
Ahmed was waiting for his father outside a shop when he heard a child's scream from the other side of the street. Turning around, he saw a toddler falling toward the ground. A clothes rack hanging lower down slowed the fall, and the man's lightning-fast reaction did the rest: he instinctively rushed under the balcony and caught the boy in his arms a moment before he hit the asphalt.
“I wasn't thinking about myself,” Ahmed said, adding that he acted purely on instinct. It took him a while to grasp what had happened: he sat down with the boy on a mattress by the wall of the building while passers-by praised him for what he had done. “My nerves were at their limit, and luckily I had something to lean on,” he admitted.
In an interview with local media, the rescuer urged parents to keep a close eye on their children and warned against putting chairs and other objects on balconies that little ones can use to climb over the railing.
