Marika Gombitová celebrates her 70th birthday in Prague: “I still consider myself a Czechoslovak singer”

Slovak singer Marika Gombitová celebrated her 70th birthday with a big concert in Prague. A nearly full hall heard her biggest hits, with well-known performers as guests. “I have always considered myself a Czechoslovak singer, and I feel that way today,” she said at the start of the evening.

Gombitová opened the concert with one of her earliest songs, “Rings of Grass”. The hits “Colosseum” and “Confession” followed. The songs flowed one into the next without long speeches, while archive footage on the screen alternated with colourful video projections. Backed by a large band, she also performed “You’re Flying in It”, “The Little Sad Ballerina” and “Ascent”.

Celeste Buckingham, Lukáš Adamec, violinist Filip Jančík, Alan Murin, and Kamila Nývltová with Daniel Hůlka joined her on stage. They sang the duet “Unknown Couple”, which Gombitová originally recorded with Karel Gott.
