Ivan Sedlisky in Prague: 115 works by the rediscovered Czech artist

Prague shows 115 works by rediscovered artist Ivan Sedlisky

A collection of 115 works by the Czech artist Ivan Sedlisky, whose oeuvre is now being rediscovered, has been presented in Prague. The Ivan Sedlisky Gallery project was initiated by businessman and collector Václav Černoch, who spent many years building a private collection of the artist’s paintings.

Ivan Sedlisky, born Ivan Kopřiva, was born on 14 May 1926 in Ostrava and died on 19 March 1999 in Prague. He worked as a painter and graphic artist and sometimes signed his work Ivo Sedlisky. His brother is the graphic artist and typographer Milan Kopřiva. Sedlisky studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under Vratislav Nechleba and was his assistant from 1952 to 1960.

The artist is best known for his cycles of large-format canvases depicting the world’s great painters, actors and politicians. He also painted portraits of women and racing drivers, and created many monumental works. In the 1960s and 1970s Sedlisky exhibited not only in Czechia but also in Germany and the Netherlands. His mosaics can still be seen in public places, for example in the spa town of Luhačovice.

The artist’s works are held in galleries and private collections in Europe and North America. Since 2000 they have appeared in commercial galleries and at auctions, and in 2012 an exhibition was held at Letovice Castle.
