Czech Education Minister Proposes Debate on Shortening Summer Holidays

Czech Education Minister Miroslav Plaga has floated the idea of revisiting the country's traditional summer holiday system, which has remained unchanged since 1925. He posted his proposal on Facebook on Sunday while on holiday by the sea.

“Over these 100 years, work, family life, travel and school itself have all changed. Maybe it's time to distribute the holidays differently throughout the school year — or does the current setup suit you fine?” the minister wrote, sparking a lively debate among social media users.

Opinions Divided

The public failed to reach a consensus. Some commenters would happily extend summer break by a whole month, citing the heat in classrooms as the main reason. Parents of young children, on the other hand, tend to favor either keeping the holidays as they are or shortening them.

“Leave July and August alone. They should focus instead on how parents are supposed to cope — after all, we only get 20 days of vacation. Not everyone can send their kid to camp or leave them with grandma,” one user wrote.

Some teachers and school principals, however, welcomed the idea. Martin Švejnoha, headmaster of the Eliška Krásnohorská Grammar School in Prague, suggested shortening summer break in favor of longer autumn, Christmas and possibly Easter holidays, along with adjusting the start and end dates of the school year.

Other commenters accused the minister of using the holiday debate to divert attention from far more pressing problems in Czech education — including curriculum reform, changes to how teaching assistants are allocated, restrictions on delaying school enrollment, and the shortage of qualified teachers along with their low salaries.

Ministry Not Yet Considering Changes

Education Ministry spokesman Ondřej Mácura said the question of overhauling the long-standing holiday system has not officially been taken up at the ministry level — for now, the idea exists only in Minister Plaga's personal musings.

The length and timing of school holidays are set annually by the Education Ministry through a separate decree. The school year itself is fixed by law, running from September 1 to August 31 of the following year. Schools, however, can adjust the school schedule somewhat — for instance, through so-called “headmaster's days off.”

“Especially during heatwaves, schools often take organizational measures — most commonly shortening lessons, moving classes to cooler rooms, spending time outdoors in the shade, or adjusting the curriculum,” Mácura explained.

It was precisely the intense heat in classrooms that many supporters of extending the holidays pointed to — some schools already struggle with stuffiness as early as June. However, responsibility for installing air conditioning or shading windows lies with the school's founding authority: for primary schools, that's the city or municipality; for secondary schools, the region. The ministry is urging them to invest in such equipment.

“Given the climate conditions, we recommend that schools — and where possible, their founding authorities — equip themselves with air conditioning or air recovery systems, and adapt the school schedule to current weather conditions,” the ministry spokesman concluded.
