Healthcare unions in Czechia are demanding that healthcare workers’ pay next year rise by at least as much as the economy-wide average — that is, by roughly 6 percent. Health Minister Adam Vojtěch replies that people working in the sector deserve decent pay, but he will not promise spending that would undermine the stability of health insurance.
“We consider this a legitimate demand: healthcare workers’ wages should not grow more slowly than wages in the national economy,” the chair of the healthcare workers’ unions, Dagmar Žitníková, told reporters. She cited the government’s estimate of average wage growth of 6.2 percent. The unions have therefore asked Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) for a meeting.
The Ministry of Health wants the insurance system to reach a balanced budget next year. The draft decree on payments for healthcare, which the ministry must issue by the end of October, provides for an increase in payments to hospitals from insurance companies of 3.5 percent.
