Sparta goalkeeper Vindahl set to join Italy's Sampdoria on loan

Danish goalkeeper Peter Vindahl of Prague's Sparta is reportedly set to leave the club on loan, continuing his career with Italy's Sampdoria, who currently play in Serie B. Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio first reported the Genoa club's interest, and sources close to Sport.cz have confirmed that the two sides are negotiating a loan deal with no option to buy. The goalkeeper is already on his way to undergo a medical.

With Vindahl sidelined by injury, his spot between the posts has been taken over by Jakub Surovčík, while newly signed Hungarian keeper Kristóf Hegyi — a tall, promising addition — is also pushing for playing time. "We've brought in a quality player in Hegyi, and now Peter Vindahl is coming back from injury, so I don't envy coach Brian Priske having to choose," Sparta's sporting director Tomáš Rosický said back in July.

An unusual injury and a lost starting spot

The 28-year-old Vindahl joined Sparta in the summer of 2023 as a replacement for Matěj Kovář and immediately established himself as the undisputed first-choice keeper, holding onto the role even through some less-than-convincing performances. His last appearance came in February, in a home match against Hradec Králové.

"He stepped awkwardly on part of the goal frame. Send him to specialists in London, and they'll tell you they've seen something like this maybe three times in their entire careers," Rosický said, describing the rare injury. Vindahl is now back in training, but it looks increasingly likely that his next chapter will unfold not at Letná, but in Italy.
