Vondroušová Case: ITIA Reveals Details of Doping Test Refusal — Vulgar Messages and a Dog Walk

The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) has published a detailed report on the case of Czech tennis player Markéta Vondroušová, who was suspended from competition for refusing to provide a doping sample. According to the agency, an independent tribunal showed understanding for the player's situation but had no choice but to impose a sanction.

The incident took place on 3 December during an out-of-competition test. Vondroušová refused to let a representative of the German anti-doping agency into her home in Prague, explaining that the doping control officer had arrived outside the one-hour window athletes are required to specify daily in the testing system. According to the tennis player, the officer also failed to show identification or documents confirming her authority. The officer herself maintains that she completed all the required formalities.

The 2023 Wimbledon champion and former world No. 6 also said that at the moment of the visit she was experiencing an acute stress reaction that caused her to act irrationally. The tribunal took this into account but concluded that such a state cannot justify refusing a doping test.

New details concern Vondroušová's conversations with the officer through the intercom. According to the anti-doping official, there were two separate exchanges, whereas the tennis player claimed there was only one. Per the report, during the visit Vondroušová called her agent, who — like her — was unaware that testing could occur outside the declared time slot. She also messaged her boyfriend on WhatsApp, describing the officer in crude, vulgar terms. The player eventually did meet the agency representative outside her home — when she went out to walk her dog.

The ITIA questioned Vondroušová's claims that she feared for her safety. The agency dismissed comparisons to the attack on Petra Kvitová, who was stabbed in 2016 by an armed intruder who broke into her flat in Prostějov. According to the ITIA's assessment, the Prague neighbourhood where Vondroušová lives is reasonably safe.

The report also notes that the very fact that she walked her dog contradicts her claims of fearing for her life — as does the fact that in her messages to her agent and partner, she never once mentioned concerns about her own safety.

The 27-year-old athlete intends to appeal the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). According to the BBC, she must file the appeal by 11 August, when the deadline expires. Should the appeal fail, Vondroušová's suspension will run until 21 June 2030.
