Hidden Treasures of North Bohemia: Liberec Region

The Liberec Region is famous for more than just Trosky, Bezděz or Ještěd — tucked away across North Bohemia are dozens of lesser-known but equally captivating spots, well worth a backpack trip for their striking views and unusual stories.

One such gem is the former glassmaking settlement of Kristiánov, home to a small museum housed in an old glassblowers' cottage that recalls the history of the renowned glassworks founded back in 1775.

The real jewel, however, is Zákupy Castle: here visitors can admire the authentic imperial chambers from the mid-19th century — nearly 160-year-old wallpaper, chandeliers, curtains, drapes and furniture, preserved in almost pristine condition.

A natural landmark worth seeking out is the Kotel Linden — a thousand-year-old tree with a sprawling crown and a hollow trunk that won the national "Tree of the Year" poll in 2009 and is deeply woven into the history of the surrounding village.

The oddly named Elephant Rocks (Bílé kameny) are rounded white formations that resemble the backs of resting elephants. Meanwhile, Kittel's House, a timber-framed building from the 18th century, remains shrouded in legends about the mysterious Dr. Kittel and now houses a museum.

In Lázně Libverda, it's worth stopping by the "Giant Barrel" restaurant — a wooden structure built in 1931 and a genuine architectural rarity. The nearby mini-museum of butter and bread lets visitors see old separators, butter churns, molds and a working bread-baking oven.

Fans of panoramic views will love the ruins of Ralsko Castle, which offer sightlines to Bezděz, Ještěd, Hazmburk, Říp, Luž, Jedlová and Klič. On the Jedlová River in the Jizera Mountains, meanwhile, lie picturesque waterfalls — the tallest drop reaches 5 meters, with flow rates that can hit 200 liters per second.

Beyond these highlights, the region hides plenty of other under-the-radar spots — Kočičí kameny, the "Kunratice Switzerland" area, the Marinka's Cross viewpoint, Vraní skály (Crow Rocks), the pilgrimage path up Kotel Hill, a monument to forgotten patriots, the so-called "little Pacific Ocean" in the Jizera foothills, Branibor Cave, the Hrádčany walls, Mount Tábor with its lookout tower, the ruins of Bradlec and Navarov castles, and the Palacký Trail.
