Pope Leo Enters Rome Hospital for Lung Nodule Surgery: What to Know

Pope Leo XIV has been admitted to Rome's Gemelli Hospital for surgery to remove a small nodule from his left lung, the Vatican announced. His audiences have been canceled through Oct. 20, and a recovery of about a week in the hospital is expected, according to Al Jazeera.

The Vatican has not said whether the nodule is cancerous. The Guardian reported that the operation is considered low risk and will establish whether the growth is malignant.

What did the pope say about his condition?

Leo, 71, told pilgrims in St. Peter's Square during his Sunday blessing that a small nodule had been found on his left lung during a routine checkup. He described it as "well-contained" and said it had been caught early. He said his doctors recommended acting, and that he had decided to follow their advice and have it removed.

The Guardian called the disclosure a rare moment of transparency at the Vatican. Al Jazeera noted that his predecessor, Francis, usually did not announce hospital visits in advance, which sometimes fueled intense speculation about his health.

When is the operation, and where is he staying?

Reports differ on timing. Al Jazeera said Leo would enter the hospital late Tuesday morning. The Guardian said the Vatican had not disclosed when the operation would happen, though Italian media suggested Tuesday afternoon.

The Guardian reported that Leo will stay in the hospital's 10-floor private-patient wing, but not in the papal suite, which is being renovated. The Gemelli is known for treating reigning popes, and a large crowd greeted him there, the paper said.

What is a lung nodule, and is it usually cancer?

According to The Independent, a lung nodule is a small growth in the spongy tissue of the lungs, no more than 3 centimeters across. Anything larger is called a mass. Nodules are typically found on chest X-rays or CT scans, often by accident during scans done for other reasons.

The Independent said nodules are very common and that around 95% are benign, caused by factors such as infections or immune-related conditions. In rare cases, 3.7-5.5%, they can be an early sign of lung cancer. Doctors weigh a nodule's size, density and location, along with the patient's age, smoking status and family history. Surgery may be recommended if a nodule causes symptoms, grows quickly or is judged high risk. The Independent said the operation can be done through an incision between the ribs or through smaller incisions with a camera and instruments, sometimes robot-assisted. Which approach Leo will have was not disclosed.

If a removed nodule proves cancerous, the Independent said, follow-up treatment may be recommended to check that the cancer has not spread.

How did Vatican officials react?

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican secretary of state, told Rai News he saw Leo on Monday night and that they spoke calmly. He said the news came "like a bolt out of the blue" and that nobody had expected it. He added that early detection allowed the operation to go ahead right away, and that problems caught in time can normally be resolved, according to the Guardian.

Why does it matter?

Leo is the head of the Roman Catholic Church. The Guardian noted that he became the first U.S.-born pope in May last year. Al Jazeera said he has no reported history of serious illness and is considered physically active, regularly swimming and playing tennis.
