A record number of attacks on vessels has been recorded in the Strait of Hormuz: twelve ships were attacked between October 5 and 11, according to reports to the UKMTO, the British service that monitors the safety of commercial shipping. A week earlier, ten ships had reported attacks.
On Sunday, October 11, alone, six ships reported being attacked, which the UKMTO says is a daily record. Analysts link the rise in attacks to increased traffic in the strait.
According to an analytical group, Tehran is attacking ships in an effort to consolidate greater control over the route, while the US military has responded by increasing the number of tankers it escorts through the southern part of the strait, where Iranian strikes can be avoided. Iran is now also attacking vessels farther away from the strait itself.
US Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees military operations in the Middle East, said on X that, despite the attacks, “commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz continues thanks to coordinated protection from US forces and regional partners.”
