At Dalešice Reservoir, a Fisherman First Sank His Car, Then Got Stranded in a Boat Without Fuel

On Saturday around 2 p.m., police in the Vysočina Region received a report of a car sliding into the water and slowly sinking. Professional firefighters and a police patrol from Hrotovice, keeping watch from a boat on the water, were sent to the scene.

Rescuers first tried to trace the owner of the submerged car through its license plate in order to pull it out of the water. They couldn't reach him right away — the phone kept ringing, but no one answered. "The phone rang, but there was no answer, so officers sent the man a text message asking him to contact the police immediately, either at the number provided or via the 158 line," said police spokeswoman Dana Čírtková.

The water rose almost 4 meters

While the recovery operation was underway on shore, it emerged that the man had parked his car on the bank of the Dalešice reservoir when the water level was low. Over the course of the day, however, the water rose by nearly four meters, leaving the car almost entirely submerged.

But that wasn't the end of his troubles. He had come to the reservoir that day to fish and had brought along an inflatable motorboat, which he took out onto the water.

Boat stranded with no fuel

About an hour later, while rescue work continued on the shore, police finally managed to reach the man by phone. He explained that he was stuck in his boat in the middle of the reservoir and couldn't make it back to land on his own — the motorboat had run out of gas.

A water rescue crew from the Czech Red Cross in Třebíč came to the unlucky fisherman's rescue, bringing him fuel. Only then was he able to return to shore — where his car, already pulled from the water, was waiting for him.

Let's hope that's the end of his bad luck for one day.
