Motorists' ad with official thrown from window stirs Czechia

The Czech Motorists party (Motoristé sobě) posted a pre-election video on social media in which officials rise up against “pirate” and “green” bureaucrats demanding endless stamps and permits, ending with the figure of one such official — a dummy — being thrown out of a window. The clip appeared ahead of the municipal and senate elections on 9 and 10 October and has sparked debate about the limits of political satire.

“This is already beyond the pale” — a political scientist's verdict

Michal Malý, a political scientist at the Faculty of Social Sciences of Charles University, called the video excessively aggressive: in his view, directly pointing at specific political parties and then “throwing” them out of a window goes beyond what's acceptable. He links the Motorists' sharper rhetoric to the party's falling poll numbers — it is competing for the same voters as the SPD party.

The party calls it “creative exaggeration”

The video was posted on the party's X account, with Culture Minister Oto Klempíř providing the voiceover himself. Asked whether the video crosses a line of taste or law, he said he saw nothing objectionable in “throwing a rag dummy out of a first-floor window into the thick, soft green grass below,” calling it creative exaggeration and irony. Yet nowhere in the video itself is it shown that the action takes place on the first floor — the accompanying sound effect, on the contrary, suggests a fall from a great height. It's clear from the footage that it's a dummy and not a real person, though its black silhouette was deliberately filmed to resemble the figure of an actual man.

“Humor is just a cover,” warns a philosopher

Language philosopher Tomáš Kobližek of the Czech Academy of Sciences believes the humorous form makes depictions of violence acceptable to a broad audience. According to him, research shows that an aggressive message delivered with irony spreads more widely than open aggression. At the same time, humor lets the authors, if criticized, defend themselves by saying it was all “not serious” — meaning they can spread justifications for violence against opponents with impunity.

The Motorists' chairman and Foreign Minister Petr Macinka also defended the video, calling it satire. In his words, the clip depicts “a revolt against permit-and-stamp harassment,” which has grown over recent years under the Pirates' leadership and was aimed at blocking construction, complicating transport and “re-educating society along a postmodern green model.” Macinka stressed that what should leave town halls is politics that, instead of solutions, produces new regulations, commissions and excuses.

Marketing expert and political scientist Anna Šavit sees nothing unlawful in the video: by law, an election campaign must above all be honest and ethical, while questions of taste are for each party to decide for itself. She compared the clip to a 2006 ODS ad, directed by Filip Renč against the ČSSD and KSČ, in which a cowboy “whips away” the old party structures.

Turek's earlier controversial remarks

Experts have criticized remarks by the Motorists' honorary chairman and MP Filip Turek before. In April he spoke of the need for “deratting” — saying that the four ministries the party controls still had plenty of “progressive, left-wing, sometimes green and other parasites” that it had decided to gradually get rid of.
