Man stabs woman in Brno toilet, court upholds 12-year sentence

The High Court in Olomouc has upheld a 12-year prison sentence for a man named Tomi, who in September last year stabbed a woman in the chest in the center of Brno after she rejected him in the women's restroom of one of the buildings. The blade was stopped by a rib, and the woman survived.

According to the court, that evening the couple had been walking around different districts of Brno, where Tomi repeatedly insulted and beat the woman. They eventually ended up in the women's restroom of a building in the city center. When the woman rejected his advances, the man hit her on the head and then stabbed her in the chest.

Tomi, who had ten previous convictions, admitted to disorderly conduct in court but denied the charge of attempted murder. According to his version of events, the woman allegedly locked herself in the restroom and injured herself. He sought an acquittal on this charge at the High Court, but the appeal was rejected as unfounded.

“The evidence presented — above all the victim's testimony and the experts' conclusions — clearly establishes his guilt. The woman could not have inflicted such a wound on herself in the way the defendant described,” said Stanislav Cik, spokesman for the High Court in Olomouc.

Immediately after the attack, Tomi himself helped the woman treat her wound and change out of her bloodied clothes. The victim managed to drive home and only sought medical help afterward.
