Russia drops bomb on a school in Sumy, killing two people

Russian aircraft dropped a quarter-tonne bomb on a school building in Sumy, in northern Ukraine, on Tuesday afternoon, the head of the regional military administration, Serhii Kryvosheienko, said on his Telegram channel. Pupils in grades one through four were in the building at the time of the strike, but none of them were hurt — teachers had managed to get the children into a shelter in time.

In total, four bombs struck the city: besides the school, a cemetery and residential buildings were also hit. Rescuers pulled the bodies of two people, a woman and a man, from the rubble of private homes. Another six people were injured, among them a one-year-old child. According to Kryvosheienko, the rescue operation is ongoing and details of the attack's aftermath are still being confirmed.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack. In a post on Telegram, he wrote that “Russia will not stop this madness without real pressure,” adding that Ukraine expects concrete action in response to such strikes, not just words.
