In Slovakia, a bear attacked a shepherd, leaving the man with severe injuries. He was hospitalized in the town of Martin. Details about his condition have not yet been released.
A special Fatra brown bear response team was dispatched to the scene. According to rescuers, the situation in the region is so serious that additional teams had to be called in from neighboring districts. The reason is the start of the corn harvest in the foothill areas, which sharply increases the risk of encountering the predator.
According to a website that tracks bears in Slovakia, during harvest time wild animals that had been hiding in the cornfields begin fleeing en masse because of the noise from farm machinery. This raises the risk of a brown bear encounter throughout the entire day, not just at dusk, as was previously believed. People are advised to stay away from cornfields during this period.
This is not the first such incident this week. On Tuesday, a bear ran into a small square in the village of Blatnica and clawed a 79-year-old woman. The victim was taken to the same hospital in Martin, but fortunately her injuries were not severe — after receiving treatment, she was released to recover at home.
