Bomb Under Car Kills Russian Lieutenant Colonel in St. Petersburg, Wife Fighting for Life

An explosion tore through a car in St. Petersburg on Thursday morning, killing a Russian military officer and severely injuring his wife. According to the St. Petersburg news portal Fontanka, the homemade explosive device detonated just as the couple were pulling away from their home.

The 53-year-old man died at the scene, while his wife suffered catastrophic injuries — she lost both legs and remains hospitalized, fighting for her life.

The blast took place in the Slavyanka district, an area where housing for Russian military personnel was previously built. According to the independent investigative outlet Agentstvo, the Russian Defense Ministry owned up to a third of all apartments in the district until 2012.

Third Attack on Senior Military Officers in a Month

Authorities have not yet disclosed the identity of the deceased officer or details of the explosion. As the opposition outlet The Moscow Times notes, this marks the third time since the start of August that a high-ranking member of the Russian military has been targeted.

On August 1, a bomb explosion at the Balzi Rossi restaurant in Moscow killed five people and wounded another 19. The suspected target of the attack was Alexander Chaiko, commander-in-chief of Russia's Aerospace Forces, whom Ukrainian authorities accuse of involvement in war crimes in Bucha.

Then, on August 13, Russian Navy Captain First Rank Robert Shageyev was killed in an explosion. Before Crimea's annexation, he had served in the Ukrainian Navy and commanded Ukraine's only submarine, the Zaporizhzhia (U-01).
