Brno Launches Quest Game About Priests Tortured by the StB in the 1950s

A new mobile quest game has appeared in Brno, dedicated to the fates of two Catholic priests — Bula and Drbola — whom the Church has recognized as martyrs. The historic streets of the Moravian capital serve as the game's setting, and the project was created on the initiative of the Brno Diocese, according to diocese spokeswoman Anežka Benešová.

Participants are transported into the atmosphere of the 1950s, when Czechoslovak citizens lived under pressure from the communist regime and its repressive apparatus — the StB secret police. In the storyline, the player takes on the role of a secret messenger who must deliver a warning and prevent the arrest of innocent people.

How the game works

The route takes about 90 minutes and covers roughly two kilometers around the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul — starting at the end of Bašty Street, beneath the staircase leading up to the cathedral, before continuing through the surrounding area of Petrov. Along the way, players must decipher codes, search for hidden clues, and gradually uncover a network of secret messages.

The story unfolds through a mobile app but is complemented by physical objects placed directly on the city's streets — allowing players to feel the tension and spirit of an era when even a seemingly minor decision could cost a life.

The story of two martyrs

As players progress through the quest, the app gradually reveals historical facts about the inner strength, courage, and tragic deaths of both priests. By canonizing them as martyrs, the Catholic Church highlighted the extraordinary courage with which they endured torture and suffering — while forgiving their tormentors.

The developers note that the game is suitable for families with children aged ten and up, groups of friends, school classes, and anyone who wants to explore history in an unconventional way. "The game 'Unconquered' shows that history doesn't have to stay locked away in textbooks. At the same time, it reminds us that courage, fidelity to one's conscience, and the willingness to stand up against injustice are values that remain just as relevant decades later," the diocese spokeswoman said.
