Brno-Střed Town Hall Opens Its Doors for a Day: Tours, Theatre and Open-Air Cinema

The town hall of the Brno-Střed district will host its traditional open house day on Friday — the twelfth one so far. Residents can look forward to guided tours of the historic former Dominican monastery building at Dominikánská 2, theatre and music performances, a fashion show, and an evening film screening in the courtyard. The news was announced by town hall spokesman Michal Šťastný.

The aim of the event is to show that the town hall building is not just a place for paperwork, but also part of the district's everyday life. For one day, the courtyard and other rooms of the historic building will be turned into a venue with a programme for both children and adults.

What visitors will see

"We want people to see the town hall not merely as an institution, but as a place where they can spend a pleasant evening. Besides the cultural programme, visitors will be able to explore the historic building of the former Dominican monastery, peek into places usually off-limits, and meet me in my office. I'll be glad if people come not only for the tour but simply to chat," said Vojtěch Mencl (ODS), mayor of Brno-Střed.

The programme kicks off at 2 p.m. with the first guided tour, with new tours starting every hour. Guests will learn the history of the building and see the rooms where council members and deputies hold their sessions. Throughout the day, the Mikro-teatro company will perform the fairy-tale play "Chereszničky," the band Midnight Coffee Session will play a set, and the Veronika Foundation will present a fashion show made entirely from recycled materials. There will also be creative workshops run by the Botanka leisure centre and a photo spot set up by the Polárka theatre.

Drawing contest results and open-air cinema

The open house day will also mark the conclusion of the "In the Middle of the City" art competition, which received a total of 308 drawings from children and adults alike. "I'm delighted by how many people took part in the competition. All the entries will be displayed right at the event, and afterwards, from September 7 to 19, in our new gallery on the ground floor of the town hall. We want to open that space to the public too, so the town hall truly feels like a living part of the city centre," Vojtěch Mencl added.

The day will wrap up at 9 p.m. with a screening of the popular animated film "Inside Out" as part of the Brno-Střed summer cinema series. According to the spokesman, refreshments and ice cream will be available throughout the event, and admission all day, including the film screening, is free of charge.
