Christian Democrats Push for No-Confidence Vote Against Babiš Government

The Czech Christian Democratic Party (KDU-ČSL) intends to force a no-confidence vote against Andrej Babiš's government. The trigger was the draft 2027 state budget, which projects a deficit of 389 billion crowns — a figure the party has called "extraordinary and unjustified."

"We're basing this on the way the 2027 state budget was presented," said Christian Democrat representative Grolich at a press conference ahead of the Chamber of Deputies session. According to him, neither the coalition partners from the Motorists movement and the SPD party, nor even some members of ANO itself — such as Minister Plaga — were aware of such a massive shortfall.

Vote sought before the elections

Grolich argued that MPs from the ruling coalition should also have a chance to voice their position — specifically through a no-confidence vote. "We feel we can't just stand by and comment on the government's moves from the sidelines. We have to get involved," he stressed, calling on opposition lawmakers to use every tool available to them.

The Christian Democrats want the no-confidence debate to take place before the end of September — that is, ahead of the municipal and Senate elections.

Pirates ready to back the move

Among the other opposition parties, the Pirates were the first to support the call for an extraordinary session of the Chamber of Deputies, with party leader Zdeněk Hřib speaking out in favor. "If Czech citizens stand to gain something from this, we'll support convening the session," he said.
