10 Places in Czechia Where You Can See Jaroslav Róna's Fantastical Sculptures

10 Places in Czechia Where You Can See Jaroslav Róna

Sculptures by academic sculptor Jaroslav Róna can be found all across Czechia — from Prague to Brno, Cheb and Mikulov. Róna is known for his instantly recognizable style, which blends fantasy, symbolism, and motifs drawn from ancient myths and chivalric legends.

Róna's sculptures are impossible to mistake for anyone else's work: they provoke strong reactions in passers-by, some are baffled, others fall in love at first sight. The artist himself draws inspiration from the art of ancient civilizations and old legends, and he makes a point of installing his works outdoors, so that at night they stand beneath the open, starry sky. What's more, the sculptor insists that visitors be allowed to touch his pieces — which is why he deliberately designs them to be experienced by touch as well as sight.

Among his most striking works is the red giraffe sculpture in Prague's Pankrác district, installed in November 2020, and the enigmatic "Parable with a Skull" in the garden of the Convent of St. Agnes in Prague, depicting a giant human skull resting on a kneeling figure.

In Rakovník, outside the local library, stands the sculpture "Reader in an Armchair," while an eight-metre-tall statue of Jobst of Luxembourg towers over Moravské náměstí in Brno. In Liberec, on Doctor E. Beneš Square next to the Plaza shopping centre, you'll find the lamppost sculpture "Edison."

Another of Róna's fantastical creations is a giraffe-like creature with a showerhead in place of a head, while in Prague's Roztyly district you can spot a giant dog named Oskar.

In Cheb, on the grounds of the castle, stands the bronze sculpture "Sepia," and in the niches of the local Špalíček you'll find the composition "David and Goliath." In October 2023, a monumental bronze sculpture called "The Stargazer" was unveiled in the castle park in Mikulov — its very first public installation. And near the mountain hotel on Ještěd, tucked among the rocks, hides the bronze sculpture "Little Martian."

Each of these ten locations is a reason in itself for a stroll and some unusual photographs, since Jaroslav Róna's works combine playfulness, mystery, and an invitation to touch art quite literally.
