David Surkamp, vocalist and guitarist of the American band Pavlov's Dog, has died. The news was shared by the band's violinist and mandolin player Abby Steiling on the group's official Facebook account.
“David leaves behind a legacy of boundless creativity, a unique artistic vision and music that touched the lives of many people around the world,” the statement reads. For those who knew and loved him, the musicians add, that legacy reaches far beyond his songs.
The band described Surkamp as a man with a deeply poetic soul and a romantic heart: he put feeling into every note, every lyric and every performance. His music, according to his bandmates, spoke directly to listeners' hearts.
Pavlov's Dog was formed in St. Louis in 1972. The first period of its history lasted until 1977 and produced two albums. After a break, the musicians returned to the stage in 1990 and 2004, and a year later for good. The band's discography includes eight studio albums, the latest of which, Wonderlust, came out in 2025.
The group has recently suffered a series of losses. Longtime keyboardist David Hamilton died in June 2025, and at the end of November 2025 vocalist and guitarist Sara Surkamp, David's wife, passed away. Other members had died earlier: Siegfried Carver (violin), Doug Rayburn (keyboards, bass guitar), Rick Stockton (bass guitar), Nathan Yatko (keyboards), Manfred Plötz (drums) and David Malachowski (guitar).
