In the center of the Portuguese city of Setúbal, at Avenida Luísa Todi 119, stands the Banco de Portugal Municipal Gallery. It hosts long-term exhibitions of treasures from the Setúbal Museum's collection from the Convent of Jesus, along with sculptures by Virgílio Domingues.
The main highlight is 14 panels from the altarpiece of the convent church of Jesus. They were painted between 1517 and 1530 by Jorge Afonso, one of Portugal's greatest 16th-century painters.
The early 20th-century building is described as eclectic, with many Art Nouveau features. The bank moved in in 1928, and a Banco de Portugal branch operated here until 1994; today the building belongs to the city. According to some accounts, it was designed by Arnaldo Adães Bermudes, a prominent architect of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The gallery has occupied it since 2013 and is effectively part of the exhibition space of the “convent” museum.
Since 2018, the gallery has also shown works from the NOVO BANCO collection, with a focus on contemporary painting and sculpture by artists born in Setúbal. The sculptor Virgílio Augusto Domingues (b. 1932) is a respected Lisbon artist: in 2009 he donated a series of sculptures, Antimonuments, to the city. There are also items from the archaeological collection, and the cast-iron spiral staircase is worth a look.
